Prediction of scandium tetraboride from first-principles calculations: Crystal structures, phase stability, mechanical properties, and hardness*

Bin-Hua Chu et al.

Summary: Using the evolutionary methodology, the crystal structure prediction for ScB4 was carried out, resulting in the identification of orthorhombic Cmcm and Pnma phases. The transition of Cmcm phase to Pnma phase at about 18 GPa was discovered for the first time. Both phases exhibit stability and excellent mechanical properties, making them promising low compressible materials. The strong covalent bonding nature of ScB4, confirmed by ELF analysis, significantly contributes to its stability.

Structural motifs and bonding in two families of boron structures predicted at megabar pressures

Katerina P. Hilleke et al.

Summary: Evolutionary structure searches at 100 GPa uncovered a series of metastable phases of boron, grouped into two families, one derived from the thermodynamic minimum alpha-Ga and the other composed of channels. Additionally, two intergrowth structures were found, constructed by stacking layers of different allotropes.

Li-Ping Ding et al.

Summary: Yttrium borides have been studied for their superconducting properties and high chemical stability, but little is known about their mechanical properties and hardness. A new YB6 compound with R3m hexagonal structure was discovered, showing higher stability than the experimental synthesized phase. The calculated Vicker hardness of R3m-YB6 is expected to be 37.0 GPa, indicating its potential as an ultrahard metal, while all stable yttrium borides are found to be metallic.

Pressure-induced boron clathrates with ambient-pressure superconductivity

Yiwei Liang et al.

Summary: Through crystal structure searches and first-principles calculations, a new pressure-stabilized boron clathrate structure, LaB8, is predicted to be thermodynamically stable above 70 GPa. The compound can be recovered under ambient conditions and is potentially superconducting, with an estimated T-c of 5 K at 70 GPa increasing to around 20 K at ambient pressure. This enhanced superconductivity is attributed to the increased B-derived electronic density of states at the Fermi level and the softened E-u mode related to vibration of the B-26 cages.
