Calcium chloride-based systems for metal electrodeposition

Jennifer M. Hartley et al.

Summary: Novel eutectic mixtures prepared using calcium chloride and ethylene glycol exhibit increased conductivity, decreased viscosity, and lower glass transition temperature. The metal speciation is similar to commonly used deep eutectic solvents, despite differences in water content. Calcium chloride, as a byproduct of the Solvay process, is inexpensive and has low toxicity.

Techno-economic assessment of a hybrid forward osmosis and membrane distillation system for agricultural water recovery

Agata Zarebska-Molgaard et al.

Summary: Despite the potential of FO-MD hybrid process in treating AD effluents, the obtained water fluxes are currently too low for industrial application. The energy consumption of the FO-MD system is much lower than the energy produced from AD effluents. The cost of water produced by the FO-MD system is influenced by the membrane module cost and the minimum water flux required for cost efficiency is identified.

Precious Metals Recovery from Waste Printed Circuit Boards by Gravity Separation and Leaching

Esra Tanisali et al.

Summary: This study successfully recovered valuable metals, such as gold, silver, and copper, from waste computers' printed circuit boards using physical separation and leaching methods. By employing various methods such as characterization studies, a hammer mill, and laboratory-scale shaking tables, the selectivity and recovery of metals were improved significantly. Leaching experiments also showed high extraction rates of Cu, Au, and Ag under optimized conditions.

Corrosion of iron, nickel and aluminium in deep eutectic solvents

Essa I. Ahmed et al.

Summary: In deep eutectic solvents, the corrosion of iron, nickel and aluminium varies depending on the type of hydrogen bond donor used, with oxalic acid leading to catastrophic corrosion of iron and aluminium but not nickel. The differences in corrosion are attributed to passivating films, oxygen reduction reaction rates, and the formation of passive layers due to hydrogen bond donor-metal ion complexes.
