Synergistic recycling and conversion of spent Li-ion battery leachate into highly efficient oxygen evolution catalysts

Zhijie Chen et al.

Summary: Converting spent Li-ion batteries into efficient energy conversion catalysts through a boriding strategy resulted in high metal ion recovery rates and competitive OER activity. The core@shell structured tri-metal borides@(oxy)hydroxides nanostructures induced by the boriding process were identified as the main reason for the superior OER performance, with fast charge-transfer kinetics and rich catalytic active sites also contributing to the high activity. This strategy has the potential to be applied to recycle and regenerate efficient electroactive materials from other metal-rich wastes for a sustainable energy future.
