Assessment of extremely severe cyclonic storms over Bay of Bengal and performance evaluation of ARW model in the prediction of track and intensity

K. S. Singh et al.

Summary: Detailed assessment was conducted for extremely severe cyclonic storms (ESCSs) in the Bay of Bengal during 1990-2020. The study found an increasing trend in the maximum intensity and duration of land-falling ESCSs, highlighting the importance of accurate forecasts due to wide socioeconomic implications. Additionally, a case study on ESCS Hudhud in 2014 showed that factors such as model domain size, vertical resolution, data assimilation, sea surface temperature, and air-sea flux schemes influenced the track and intensity of the storm.

Impact of climate change on intense Bay of Bengal tropical cyclones of the post-monsoon season: a pseudo global warming approach

P. Jyoteeshkumar Reddy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of climate change on tropical cyclones forming in the Bay of Bengal region, predicting intensified cyclone intensity and increased precipitation in future scenarios. The results suggest that future TCs are likely to be more intense, with higher wind speeds and increased damage potential in a warming climate.

Assessment of WRF Model Parameter Sensitivity for High-Intensity Precipitation Events During the Indian Summer Monsoon

Sandeep Chinta et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify the parameters that most strongly influence the model output variables in the WRF model using Global Sensitivity Analysis (GSA) method. Morris One-At-a-Time (MOAT) is used to evaluate sensitivity of 23 chosen tunable parameters corresponding to seven physical parameterization schemes. The study considers high-intensity 4-day precipitation events during the Indian summer monsoon, and assesses the consistency of sensitivity analysis results with different initial and lateral boundary conditions.

A sensitivity study of WRF model microphysics and cumulus parameterization schemes for the simulation of tropical cyclones using GPM radar data

Harish Baki et al.

Summary: This study focuses on determining the best combination of microphysics (MP) and cumulus parameterization (CP) schemes for simulating Tropical Cyclones (TCs) in the Indian subcontinent region using the WRF model. The results show that the Kain-Fritsch scheme, combined with all MP schemes, predicts tracks the best among all available CP schemes, and the Thompson scheme reproduces reflectivities closest to observations. The best set of schemes outperformed random schemes in all aspects for cyclone Bulbul.

Sensitivity of precipitation and temperature over the Mount Kenya area to physics parameterization options in a high-resolution model simulation performed with WRFV3.8.1

Martina Messmer et al.

Summary: Sensitivity experiments with the WRF model were conducted to find the optimal parameterization setup for precipitation amounts and patterns around Mount Kenya at a convection-permitting scale of 1 km. The use of the Grell-Freitas cumulus parameterization in domains with resolutions > 5 km provided the best results for precipitation patterns and amounts.

Numerical simulation of an extremely severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal using WRF modelling system: influence of model initial condition

K. S. Singh et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of the WRF model in forecasting the extremely severe cyclonic storm that hit Bangladesh in 2007. The results showed that using 3D-VAR data assimilation improved the accuracy of the forecast, especially with the availability of quality satellite observations. The study highlights the importance of using advanced data assimilation techniques in high-resolution weather forecasting models.

Impact of WRF Parameterization Schemes on Track and Intensity of Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Fani

Biranchi Kumar Mahala et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of microphysical parameterization schemes on the track and intensity of Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Fani using the WRF model. Results showed that the MP3 scheme had the best track prediction, followed by MP14. The schemes were able to simulate the cyclone's path, track error, intensity changes, and intense convection reasonably well.
