Supermassive Black Holes, Ultralight Dark Matter, and Gravitational Waves from a First Order Phase Transition

Hooman Davoudiasl et al.

Summary: This paper presents a model that explores the connection between the formation of supermassive black holes and ultralight dark matter in the early Universe. By considering a confining first order phase transition at a temperature of around 10 keV, the production of primordial supermassive black holes with masses of 10^9 solar masses is facilitated. This phase transition also suggests a possible mass for a motivated ultralight axion dark matter candidate. Additionally, the assumed first order phase transition is expected to generate primordial gravitational waves in the frequency range of around 10^(-12)-10^(-9) Hz, which could be detectable by pulsar timing arrays.

Tests for the existence of horizon through gravitational waves from a small binary in the vicinity of a massive object

Yun Fang et al.

Summary: In this letter, gravitational waves emitted from a small binary are calculated by solving the Teukolsky equation in the background of a massive exotic compact object, which is described by a Schwarzschild geometry with a reflective boundary condition. The continuous echo waves due to reflectivity of the exotic compact object at its would-be horizon provide a detailed probe into the nature of the object's horizon.

Searching for ultralight bosons with supermassive black hole ringdown

Adrian Ka-Wai Chung et al.

Summary: In this study, the shifts of gravitational quasinormal-mode frequencies of a rotating black hole due to the presence of a surrounding bosonic cloud were calculated. A mock analysis was performed on simulated Laser Interferometer Space Antenna observational data containing injected ringdown signals from supermassive black holes. The findings suggest that the existence of cloud-forming ultralight bosons can be determined with less than an hour of observational data.

Probing ultralight dark matter with future ground-based gravitational-wave detectors

Chen Yuan et al.

Summary: The study shows that higher modes dominate the stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) for bosons with masses greater than or similar to 10^(-12) eV, which will be particularly relevant for future ground-based GW detectors. By estimating the signal-to-noise ratio of this SGWB, future ground-based GW detectors could observe or constrain bosons in the mass range between 7 x 10^(-14) and 2 x 10^(-11) eV, significantly improving on the current and future constraints imposed by LIGO and Virgo observations.

Ultralight fermionic dark matter

Hooman Davoudiasl et al.

Summary: The conventional lore excludes fermionic dark matter with mass lighter than a few hundred electronvolts based on the Pauli exclusion principle. A new method is proposed in this paper which involves numerous quasi-degenerate species of fermions without couplings to the standard model to evade this bound. Gravitational interactions impose constraints from measurements at the LHC, cosmic rays, supernovae, and black hole spins and lifetimes, with a particular limit on the number of distinct species of particles being less than or around 10^62.

Modeling and searching for a stochastic gravitational-wave background from ultralight vector bosons

Leo Tsukada et al.

Summary: This study explores the possibility of ultralight bosons as dark matter candidates triggering superradiant instability around spinning black holes, emitting gravitational waves as a promising source for detectors. By searching for a background signal using data from Advanced LIGO, the researchers found no evidence supporting the signal, allowing for constraints on minimally coupled vector fields with masses in a certain range.
