Long-term safety and tolerability of subretinal transplantation of embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium in Asian Stargardt disease patients

Youngje Sung et al.

Summary: Although hESCs have potential for regenerative medicine, concerns exist regarding tumorigenicity, immunogenicity, and ethics. A 3-year clinical trial involving subretinal transplantation of hESC-RPE cells in SMD patients showed no serious adverse events and favorable functional and anatomical outcomes compared to natural disease progression. One patient had improved best-corrected visual acuity, while others maintained stability during the follow-up period.

Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell implantation in patients with optic atrophy

Neslihan Sinim Kahraman et al.

Summary: The study investigated the safety and efficacy of suprachoroidal umbilical cord-derived MSCs (UC-MSCs) implantation in patients with optic atrophy. Significant improvements in BCVA and VF results were observed during the 12-month follow-up. However, there was no significant difference in the mean RNFL thickness measurements between baseline and 12 months.

Transplanted pluripotent stem cell-derived photoreceptor precursors elicit conventional and unusual light responses in mice with advanced retinal degeneration

Darin Zerti et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the ability of pluripotent stem cell-derived cone precursors to engraft and restore light responses in a mouse model of end-stage photoreceptor degeneration. While half of the transplanted mice exhibited improved visual behavior, some retinal ganglion cells showed unusual responses, indicating the need for further research to improve engraftment yield and counteract retinal remodeling for clinical applications.
