Origin of Hydrogen Incorporated into Ethylene during Electrochemical CO2 Reduction in Membrane Electrode Assembly

Woong Choi et al.

Summary: A catholyte-free MEA is proposed for electrochemical CO2 reduction. Water management is critical for its catalyst-membrane interface. The study finds that protons for ethylene mainly come from the anolyte, and humidification of CO2 affects the efficiency and current density. Mass transport of CO2 and water limits the performance of the MEA.

Bo Jiang et al.

Summary: High-entropy oxides (HEOs) are of great interest in various fields due to their potential in tailoring and combining materials functionalities. This study reports the investigation of local structures of pyrochlore HEOs with five M-site cations, revealing different levels of randomness in the M-site order. Computational and experimental analysis in this work provides insights into the control of local order/disorder motifs in HEOs for future material designs.

Rare-earth-regulated Ru-O interaction within the pyrochlore ruthenate for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution in acidic media

Hai Liu et al.

Summary: By constructing pyrochlore rare-earth ruthenate structures with a series of rare-earth elements (Nd, Sm, Gd, Er, and Yb), the electronic structure of the Ru sites could be tuned, leading to an improved OER performance in acid media by reducing the strong bonding between Ru sites and oxygen intermediates. Among them, Nd2Ru2O7 exhibited the lowest OER onset overpotential and Tafel slope, along with significantly higher intrinsic activity and durability compared to RuO2 catalyst.

Metal Substitution Steering Electron Correlations in Pyrochlore Ruthenates for Efficient Acidic Water Oxidation

Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: This study successfully improves the OER activity of pyrochlore ruthenate in acidic media by partially substituting Y3+ ions, achieving high intrinsic mass activity and excellent stability. By manipulating the electronic states to enhance Ru-O covalency and rearrange band alignment, the charge transfer energy is reduced, promoting the occurrence of chemical reactions.

Stabilizing Highly Active Ru Sites by Suppressing Lattice Oxygen Participation in Acidic Water Oxidation

Yunzhou Wen et al.

Summary: Ternary oxide electrocatalysts consisting of Sr, Ru, and Ir have been developed to achieve high OER activity and stability in acidic electrolytes. The interaction in the Ru-O-Ir local structure suppresses the participation of lattice oxygen during OER, thus improving stability, while modulation of the electronic structure of active Ru sites optimizes the binding energetics of OER oxo-intermediates.
