Fate of an antibiotic and its effects on nitrogen transformation functional bacteria in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands

Yucong Zheng et al.

Summary: This study found that chronic exposure to SMX can lead to a decline in nitrogen removal performance of IVCW, but IVCW still demonstrates a high removal efficiency of sulfamethoxazole. ANAMMOX may be a potential pathway for nitrogen removal, but it can result in the accumulation of NO3--N and carbon deficiency. Through biodegradation, IVCW shows a potential for treating wastewater containing antibiotics.

Impact of functional microbes on nitrogen removal in artificial tidal wetlands in the Yangtze River estuary: Evidence from molecular and stable isotopic analyses

Manping Zhang et al.

Summary: The study explored potential solutions to the deteriorating water quality in the Yangtze River estuary, and found that the use of tidal wetland mesocosms can improve nitrogen removal performance and greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through the contribution of nitrification. The results provide a sustainable solution to the water pollution problem in the Yangtze River estuary.

Phosphorus removal performance of microbial-enhanced constructed wetlands that treat saline wastewater

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that using intertidal wetland sediments as a microbial source for CWs can effectively improve phosphorus removal rates, with bacteria such as phosphorus-accumulating organisms enhancing microbial transformation of phosphorus. However, the addition of IWS increased phosphorus loss via substrate accumulation and decreased phosphorus removal rate via plant uptake.

Fate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in home water purification systems

Xin Gu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in tap water, effluents, and filters of home water purification systems (HWPSs). While HWPSs with fresh filters showed high efficiency in removing antibiotics and ARGs, long-term operation resulted in reduced removal rates and even release of antibiotics and ARGs. The presence of biofilms on many filters and the correlation between certain bacterial phyla and the abundance of ARGs highlight the potential risks posed by HWPSs in accelerating exposure to antibiotics and ARGs for water consumers.

Performance and bacterial community dynamics of hydroponically grown Iris pseudacorus L. during the treatment of antibiotic-enriched wastewater at low/normal temperature

Hongbin Lu et al.

Summary: Antibiotics, particularly levofloxacin, in constructed wetlands have differential effects on pollutant removal at normal and low temperatures. Temperature and antibiotic concentration play significant roles in the removal of pollutants, with low concentrations of antibiotics promoting degradation of pollutants under normal temperature conditions. Bacterial community richness is higher and diversity lower at normal temperature, while bacterial genera and functions are greatly influenced by antibiotic concentration, temperature, and test time. This study identifies antibiotic and low temperature-resistant microorganisms, providing valuable information for understanding the ecological effects of levofloxacin.

Improving removal of antibiotics in constructed wetland treatment systems based on key design and operational parameters: A review

Yujie He et al.

Summary: The review highlights the importance of optimizing flow configuration, selecting plant species, and compensating for low microbial activity at low temperature for efficient removal of antibiotics in CWTS. Furthermore, a hybrid-CWTS that integrates horizontal and vertical subsurface flow could offer sufficient removal performance at reasonable cost. Future research should focus on elucidating key mechanisms for specific antibiotics removal to guide optimization of design and operational parameters.
