Critically Appraising the Significance of the Oral Mycobiome

Summary: Recent research on the oral microbiome has focused on the fungal component, particularly through ITS amplicon sequencing. Studies have shown a large fungal diversity in the oral mycobiome, with Candida being the dominant genus. Harsh lysis methods for DNA extraction have revealed two distinct oral mycobiome community types, each dominated by Candida or Malassezia. Further investigation is needed to determine the metabolic activity and significance of low-abundance oral mycobiome members acquired from the environment.

Prevalence and in vitro antifungal susceptibility of commensal yeasts in the external ear canal of cats

Further research is needed to determine if X. testudinatus is a vehicle for marine fungal diseases.
