A MACEing silicon: Towards single-step etching of defined porous nanostructures for biomedicine

Hashim Alhmoud et al.

Summary: Metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) offers control over size, shape, and porosity of porous silicon nanostructures in a single step, making them suitable as biomaterials. The simplicity and flexibility of MACE are advantages, but the complexity of reaction parameters and lack of a complete model hinder rational design. Current understanding of the MACE reaction mechanism still contains uncertainties.

Porous Silicon Optical Devices: Recent Advances in Biosensing Applications

Rosalba Moretta et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the leading advancements in porous silicon (PSi) optical-biosensors achieved over the past five years, highlighting the cost-effective fabrication process, high internal surface area, tunable pore size, and photonic properties. Different optical PSi biosensors are classified into four classes based on the biorecognition elements immobilized on the surface, with discussions on PL signal modulation and effective refractive index changes as the main optical transduction mechanisms. Additionally, common approaches for chemically stabilizing and functionalizing the PSi surface are described.

Metal-Assisted Catalytic Etching (MACE) for Nanofabrication of Semiconductor Powders

Kurt W. Kolasinski

Summary: The electroless etching of semiconductors has become an advanced microfabrication process with the addition of structured metal catalysts. This technique allows for the precise patterning of wafer substrates and the production of nanoparticles, leading to the creation of porous structures and nanostructured powders. Metal-assisted catalytic etching can be controlled to produce various pore structures in substrates and nanowires with different core compositions.
