The Use of Essential Oils from Thyme, Sage and Peppermint against Colletotrichum acutatum

Armina Morkeliune et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that thyme, sage, and peppermint essential oils have inhibitory effects on the strawberry pathogen Colletotrichum acutatum. Thyme EO completely inhibited C. acutatum in vitro, while peppermint and sage EO reduced mycelial growth. Detached strawberry leaf experiments showed that peppermint and thyme EO at certain concentrations could reduce disease occurrence, but efficacy was relatively low.

Pathogenicity of Colletotrichum acutatum to different strawberry cultivars and anthracnose control with essential oils

Armina Morkeliune et al.

Summary: Colletotrichum spp. is a significant pathogen of strawberry causing high yield losses. Essential oils possess antibacterial and antifungal properties and can be used as environmentally friendly alternatives to chemical products for plant protection. In this study, Mentha piperita EO showed antifungal activity against C. acutatum, while Thymus vulgaris EO demonstrated potential as a biocontrol agent against strawberry anthracnose. Further research is needed to fully evaluate the efficacy of essential oils in controlling plant pathogens.
