Projections of desertification trends in Central Asia under global warming scenarios

Xiaofei Ma et al.

Summary: Central Asia is a core region of global desertification, and this study investigated the desertification process in CA under intensifying global greening policies and global warming scenarios. The findings show an increasing trend in temperature, precipitation, and vegetation index in CA, with climate projections indicating warmer and wetter conditions in the future. Desertification in CA is expected to worsen with global warming, particularly affecting regions like Xinjiang in China and Kazakhstan.

Quantitative Assessment of Environmental Sensitivity to Desertification Using the Modified MEDALUS Model in a Semiarid Area

Sayed Fakhreddin Afzali et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively evaluated the current desertification status in the Segzi Plain, Isfahan Province, Iran, using the modified MEDALUS model and GIS. Results showed that about 23.5% of the area is classified as high risk to desertification, and 76.5% classified as very high risk. Climate, vegetation, and groundwater quality were identified as the most important drivers for desertification in the study area, while erosion and soil indices were of minimal importance.
