Efficient Purification of Ethylene from C2 Hydrocarbons with an C2H6/C2H2-Selective Metal-Organic Framework

Shan-Qing Yang et al.

Summary: The separation of ethylene (C2H4) from C-2 hydrocarbons is challenging, but the newly synthesized microporous Mg-based MOF NUM-9 shows promise with high stability and selectivity for C2H6/C2H2. NUM-9a, when activated, demonstrates good performance in separating C2H6/C2H2 from raw ethylene gases, and its unique structure allows for the selective adsorption of C2H6 and C2H2 simultaneously, leading to a greener and more energy-efficient separation strategy for separating C2H4 from C-2 hydrocarbon mixtures.

Effect of Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Database Selection on the Assessment of Gas Storage and Separation Potentials of MOFs

Hilal Daglar et al.

Summary: The development of computation-ready metal-organic framework databases has accelerated high-throughput computational screening of materials for gas storage and separation. Differences in structural features due to database selection significantly impact the calculated gas uptakes and ideal selectivities of materials at low pressure. The identification of top-performing materials for gas separation strongly depends on the choice of the database used in simulations.

Adsorption Site Selective Occupation Strategy within a Metal-Organic Framework for Highly Efficient Sieving Acetylene from Carbon Dioxide

Lingzhi Yang et al.

Summary: The study presents a selective adsorption strategy for separating acetylene and carbon dioxide by utilizing differences in orientation in a carefully designed amine-functionalized metal-organic framework. Incorporation of amino groups not only occupies the adsorption sites of CO2 molecules but also enhances the binding affinity with acetylene molecules. This material exhibits a high C2H2 amount at low pressure and a remarkably high C2H2/CO2 IAST selectivity at 1 bar and 298 K.

Pore Engineering for One-Step Ethylene Purification from a Three-Component Hydrocarbon Mixture

Baoyong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study presents three new isostructural porous coordination networks that can produce high-purity ethylene through one separation step, by selectively adsorbing acetylene and ethane while having low affinity for ethylene. Hindered by the similar properties of C2 hydrocarbons, the networks achieved this through fine-tuned dual cage structures and specific interactions within the cages.

An ethane-favored metal-organic framework with tailored pore environment used for efficient ethylene separation

Chaohui He et al.

Summary: The development of ethane-selective adsorbents for purifying ethylene into polymer-grade materials is challenging but meaningful. By tailoring the pore chemistry of a metal-organic framework, high performance adsorbents like BUT-10 can be constructed to enhance C2H6 adsorption ability. Computational studies have shown that multiple adsorbate-framework interactions in the appropriate pore environment lead to stronger adsorption affinity for C2H6. Breakthrough experiments using BUT-10 as a C2H6-selective adsorbent have successfully produced polymer grade C2H4 directly from mixtures under ambient conditions.
