Construction productivity prediction through Bayesian networks for building projects: case from Vietnam

Ha Duy Khanh et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the construction productivity of building projects under the influence of potential factors and develop a predictive model based on Bayesian network. The findings indicate that construction productivity is significantly affected by worker characteristic-related factors, working frequency of workers, complexity of tasks, level of technology application, and accidents. The prediction error of the Bayesian network model is within a reasonable range for various construction tasks.

Production pressures in the building sector of the construction industry: a systematic review of literature

Jack Neale et al.

Summary: This study explores the negative impacts of production pressures in the building sector, which include increased stress levels in employees, reduced craftsmanship, accident-prone environments, and decreased safety behavior. Effective mitigation strategies related to scheduling, leadership, communication, and motivation were proposed to address these issues and create a safer working environment. An original causal loop diagram of production pressures in the building sector was also developed as a tool for further research and implementation in construction projects.

Key barriers to increase construction productivity: the Singapore case

George Ofori et al.

Summary: This study investigates the barriers to achieving high construction productivity in Singapore and provides suggestions for policy formulation and action to improve the industry's productivity performance. The top three barriers identified are delays in providing information to contractors, poor skills of workers, and inadequate pre-project planning and pre-work planning. The sources of these barriers are consultants and contractors, suggesting the need for cooperation among stakeholders to improve productivity.Due to the unique labor force composition of migrant workers, the findings may also be relevant to countries with a similar labor demographic. The study contributes to knowledge by identifying the most significant barriers to productivity improvement and offering suggestions to overcome them.

Design for occupational safety and health: A theoretical framework for organisational capability

Ebenezer Adaku et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviews prior conceptualizations of organizational capability, provides a robust conceptualization, and develops a nomological network to operationalize organizational capability in the context of design firms' ability to ensure design for occupational safety and health (DfOSH). Organizational capability is presented as a multi-dimensional construct that can be operationalized at various levels of specificity, aiding design firms in improving their DfOSH capability and assisting project clients in clarifying design firms' organizational capabilities in the procurement process.

Peter Hasle et al.

Summary: Research has shown that occupational safety and health management benefits both worker safety and health as well as business performance. However, OSH management often ends up being a sidecar to operations management due to conflicts between the risk logic of OSH management and the efficiency logic of OM. To increase the impact of the OSH field, research is needed in the relations between the two fields.

Addressing behavioural safety concerns on Qatari Mega projects

S. O. Ajayi et al.

Summary: The study found that there is a low level of behavioral safety awareness among construction workers in Qatar mega projects, primarily due to lack of adequate safety knowledge, leading to an exacerbation of accident rates. In order to address this issue, more proactive safety management approaches are needed, including enhanced communication and feedback, increased awareness, education and regular observation and appraisal of employees.

Review of the Construction Labour Demand and Shortages in the EU

Belinda Brucker Juricic et al.

Summary: The paper reviews the recent literature on skill and labour shortages in the European Union construction sector, forecasting an increase in shortages due to population decline and an aging workforce. Different classification systems and instruments are used by EU Member States to recognize and forecast labour shortages, but the possibility of using migrant labour to address these shortages remains uncertain. Labor shortages are evident in various sectors across most Member States, with the construction sector seeking workers at all skill levels and likely relying on incoming migrants for future development in Construction 4.0.
