Toxic effects of cadmium on growth of Aloe ferox Mill

Summary: Cadmium, a heavy metal resulting from increased global environmental pollution, negatively affects the growth and physiological properties of Aloe. Cadmium alters the leaf morphology and reduces the biomass of the aboveground plant part, as well as affects the cuticle deposition and stomata count in the leaves. Roots treated with cadmium exhibit lower lignification and decreased level of membrane lipids peroxidation. Although cadmium concentration is highest in the roots, a relatively high portion of cadmium is translocated to the leaves, posing a potential hazard to the active secondary metabolites present in Aloe leaves.
