Facile construction of novel organic-inorganic tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin/Bi2MoO6 heterojunction for tetracycline degradation: Performance, degradation pathways, intermediate toxicity analysis and mechanism insight

Chunchun Wang et al.

Summary: Developing durable photocatalysts for efficient antibiotics degradation is crucial for environmental purification. In this study, hierarchical organic-inorganic TCPP/Bi2MoO6 heterojunctions were successfully synthesized and showed superior photocatalytic performance in the visible light degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride. The high catalytic activity was attributed to the interfacial interaction between TCPP and Bi2MoO6, which facilitated charge carrier separation and enhanced visible-light absorbance.

Applying a novel advanced oxidation process of activated peracetic acid by CoFe2O4 to efficiently degrade sulfamethoxazole

Jingwen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, peracetic acid (PAA) was successfully activated by cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4/PAA) to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The best removal efficiency of SMX was achieved under neutral conditions with 200 μM PAA and 0.1 g/L CoFe2O4. The redox cycle of Co3+/ Co2+ on the CoFe2O4 surface dominated PAA activation, producing organic radicals that accounted for SMX degradation. The potential applicability of the CoFe2O4/PAA system in degrading micro-organic pollutants was suggested based on the results of this study.

Reactivity of Chlorine Radicals (Cl• and Cl2•-) with Dissolved Organic Matter and the Formation of Chlorinated Byproducts

Yu Lei et al.

Summary: Chlorine radicals, including Cl· and Cl2(·-), are produced in sunlight waters or water treatment processes. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a significant role in reacting with or scavenging Cl· and Cl2(·-) in water. This study quantified the reaction rates between chlorine radicals and DOM and observed that DOM with high aromaticity and total antioxidant capacity tends to react faster with Cl2(·-). Additionally, the study monitored the formation of chlorinated byproducts, highlighting the importance of DOM in scavenging chlorine radicals and the potential risks associated with producing unknown toxicity chlorinated byproducts.

Reactivity of Peracetic Acid with Organic Compounds: A Critical Review

Juhee Kim et al.

Summary: Peracetic acid (PAA) is an emerging oxidant and disinfectant that has gained increasing attention in wastewater treatment, food, and medical industries. This paper comprehensively reviews the reactivity of PAA with various organic compounds, highlighting PAA as a highly reactive and selective electrophile with significant variability in second-order rate constants. The study identifies sulfur moieties as exhibiting exceptionally high reactivity towards PAA and suggests the formation of oxygen-added reaction products from PAA oxidation. Further research is needed to evaluate a broader range of compounds and their oxidation products and toxicity in wastewater treatment.
