Cultivated Land Fragmentation and Its Influencing Factors Detection: A Case Study in Huaihe River Basin, China

Jiale Liang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the degree and spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of cultivated land fragmentation (CLF) in the Huaihe River Basin, and explored the influencing factors. The results showed that the spatial distribution of cultivated land was relatively balanced, and the overall fragmentation degree was increasing. The factors of normalized difference vegetation index, per capita cultivated land area, and intensity of human activity had a significant impact on CLF.

Trends for agricultural land-use in the CEECs following the collapse of the Eastern Bloc

Jerzy Banski et al.

Summary: The main goal of this study is to analyze and diagnose the agricultural land-use structure in the Central and Eastern European countries. The study found significant spatial differentiation in the grassland and arable land structure in the region. After the fall of the Eastern Bloc, all CEECs experienced a decrease in grassland area and a decline in the cultivation of perennial-type crops.

Farmland fragmentation concourse: Analysis of scenarios and research gaps

Pierre Damien Ntihinyurwa et al.

Summary: The conceptualization of farmland fragmentation varies across different scientific disciplines and units of analysis, creating challenges for policy makers and research scholars in devising suitable fragmentation management strategies. This study aims to develop a typology of fragmentation to guide farmland management decisions for food security, drawing on an integrative concept-centric qualitative approach and analysis of existing literature. The analysis revealed a diversity of land fragmentation forms and identified 40 different fragmentation scenarios, emphasizing the need for a combination of various spatial and non-spatial effectors in management interventions.

The Effect of Land Fragmentation on the Technical Inefficiency of Dairy Farms

Tracy Bradfield et al.

Summary: Land fragmentation, distance between parcels, and land separate from the main farm all contribute to technical inefficiency on dairy farms in Ireland. Efficiency can be improved by increasing parcel area, reducing travel distances, seeking advisory services, implementing intensive practices, and hiring labor.
