The use of digital technology for social wellbeing reduces social isolation in older adults: A systematic review

Keya Sen et al.

Summary: This systematic review highlights the importance of technology use in older adults to reduce social isolation. The findings suggest that engaging older adults at the community level and following best practices in community-based participatory research can enhance social wellbeing. Additionally, mobile technology-based applications can help older adults stay connected with family and access healthcare resources, leading to improved physical and mental wellbeing. The use of technology devices addresses specific needs of older adults and increases digital use self-efficacy, particularly during situations like the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Caregiver Support Ratio in Europe: Estimating the Future of Potentially (Un)Available Caregivers

Oscar Ribeiro et al.

Summary: This study calculates the caregiver support ratio (CSR) for a group of European countries, finding that it will progressively decline in the coming decades. Although there are differences in CSR between countries, the number of potential caregivers aged 45-64 for each person aged 80+ will decrease uniformly. This poses challenges for cross-national gerontological social policies and healthcare provision.

A Country-Level Empirical Study on the Fiscal Effect of Elderly Population Health: The Mediating Role of Healthcare Resources

Bo Tang et al.

Summary: The demographic shifts towards an aging population pose significant fiscal challenges for governments. This study examines the impact of the elderly's health burden on fiscal balance and the mediating role of healthcare resources using cross-country panel data. The results show that the elderly health burden negatively affects fiscal balance, especially in societies with a higher proportion of elderly individuals. Additionally, healthcare resources, including funds, labor, and facilities, play a significant mediating role. This confirms the importance of reducing the elderly health burden and improving the efficiency of healthcare resources for fiscal sustainability.

Multidomain Social Determinants of Depressive Symptoms for the Elderly with Chronic Diseases: Evidence from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that 40.1% of Chinese elderly individuals with chronic diseases reported depressive symptoms. Factors such as being female, having a low income, experiencing a disability, living in rural areas, and not being engaged in work were associated with a higher probability of suffering from depressive symptoms, while increasing age, social security coverage, and higher education level had a protective effect. The effects of these factors varied across different points of depression score distributions, suggesting that targeted psychological health services and interventions are needed for socially disadvantaged populations.
