Self-Sterilizing 3D-Printed Polylactic Acid Surfaces Coated with a BODIPY Photosensitizer

Sol R. Martinez et al.

Summary: A novel self-sterilizing material coated with a halogenated BODIPY photosensitizer was developed, showing effective inactivation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli under visible light activation. The material exhibited high antibacterial efficacy and could be reused, offering a green and economic alternative to traditional antimicrobial approaches.

Candida biofilm matrix as a resistance mechanism against photodynamic therapy

Bruna Albuquerque Garcia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) in protecting Candida albicans biofilms from antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and found that strains with reduced ECM compounds were more sensitive to aPDT. These findings suggest that ECM may play a significant protective role against aPDT in C. albicans biofilms.

Photoinactivation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilm by Dicationic Diaryl-Porphyrin

Viviana Teresa Orlandi et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is gaining attention as a promising tool for treating microbial infections and sanitizing environments. A study on a panel of photosensitizers found that dicationic diaryl-porphyrins show potential in efficiently photoinactivating Pseudomonas aeruginosa, including inhibiting biofilm formation. These findings suggest the potential applicability of dicationic diaryl-porphyrins in different fields for combating difficult-to-treat microbes like P. aeruginosa.

Summary: This manuscript investigates the photophysical properties of tetra-cisplatin porphyrin derivatives and their antimicrobial photoinactivation effects against Gram + and Gram - bacterial strains. The results suggest that the compound substituted at the meta position is the most efficient photosensitizer against bacterial cultures, indicating potential applications of tetra-cationic porphyrins containing cisplatin derivatives in clinical infections.
