Comparison of Reanalysis and Observational Precipitation Datasets Including ERA5 and WFDE5

Birgit Hassler et al.

Summary: This study compared eleven different precipitation datasets and found that ERA5 and ERA5-Land are significant improvements over other reanalysis datasets, showing better agreement with observations. However, ERA5 underestimates low precipitation rates in the tropics.

Evaluation of multiple reanalyses in reproducing the spatio-temporal variability of temperature and precipitation indices over southern South America

Rocio Balmaceda-Huarte et al.

Summary: Multiple temperature and precipitation indices were analyzed in different sub-regions of southern South America from 1979 to 2017, focusing on extremes. The reanalyses generally represented spatial patterns well, but showed differences in extreme indices and tended to overestimate precipitation in certain areas. Long-term changes showed warming conditions, but reanalyses had varying temporal changes in temperature indices.

A Comparison of Moderate and Extreme ERA-5 Daily Precipitation With Two Observational Data Sets

Pauline Rivoire et al.

Summary: A comparison was made between ERA-5 reanalysis data and observational data sets EOBS and CMORPH regarding daily precipitation, revealing a decrease in co-occurrence with increasing precipitation intensity. ERA-5 and EOBS show better agreement in precipitation intensity over central Europe and disagreement in tropical areas.

Sensitivity of precipitation and temperature over the Mount Kenya area to physics parameterization options in a high-resolution model simulation performed with WRFV3.8.1

Martina Messmer et al.

Summary: Sensitivity experiments with the WRF model were conducted to find the optimal parameterization setup for precipitation amounts and patterns around Mount Kenya at a convection-permitting scale of 1 km. The use of the Grell-Freitas cumulus parameterization in domains with resolutions > 5 km provided the best results for precipitation patterns and amounts.
