Hierarchically Fabricated Amyloid Fibers via Evaporation-Induced Self-Assembly

Summary: Multiscale hierarchical nano- and microstructures of amyloid fibrils are fabricated through evaporation-induced self-assembly and topographic surface patterning techniques. Uniaxial alignment of amyloid fibrils is achieved during drying, resulting in optical textures of the aggregates. By varying the width of the topographic pattern, the fiber structure can be tuned, offering potential applications in nanowires and sensors utilizing naturally-abundant biomaterials.

Role of homeotropic alignment strength at the air interface of polymerized liquid crystal layers

Summary: It has been found that domains are formed in liquid crystal thin films under certain conditions due to the tilt angle induced at the air interface. A measurement method using optical analysis of domains and tilt angles suggests that a non-negligible homeotropic anchoring strength at the air interface is responsible for the domain formation.
