While the posterior thalamic nucleus to primary somatosensory cortex circuit mediates allodynia from tissue injury, the parafascicular thalamic nucleus to anterior cingulate cortex circuit mediates allodynia associated with depression-like states. Manipulating these circuits affects allodynia from either tissue injury or depression-like states separately.
