Polyyne [3]Rotaxanes: Synthesis via Dicobalt Carbonyl Complexes and Enhanced Stability

Connor W. Patrick et al.

Summary: This study reports a new method for synthesizing stable carbyne insulated molecular wires through the synthesis of polyyne polyrotaxanes. Using an active metal template route with dicobalt carbonyl masked alkyne equivalents, two [3]rotaxanes were successfully synthesized and compared with naked polyyne dumbbell. The results showed that the nanohoop rotaxane exhibited 4.5 times greater thermal stability.

Applying reticular synthesis to the design of Cu-based MOFs with mechanically interlocked linkers

Alexander J. Stirk et al.

Summary: The study explores the concept of robust dynamics by incorporating mechanically interlocked molecules into metal-organic framework materials, allowing large amplitude motions. New T-shaped linkers were designed and synthesized to create various MOFs with specific structures, demonstrating the potential for creating MOFs with diverse functions and dynamics.

Power of Infrared and Raman Spectroscopies to Characterize Metal-Organic Frameworks and Investigate Their Interaction with Guest Molecules

Konstantin Hadjiivanov et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with various functionalities and porous structures are suitable for a wide range of applications. Vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman) plays a crucial role in characterizing MOF materials and studying their interaction with gases, highlighting both advantages and limitations of the technique. By combining IR and Raman spectroscopies with other techniques, the structure, properties, and reactivity of MOFs can be explicitly established.

Precise Spatial Arrangement and Interaction between Two Different Mobile Components in a Metal-Organic Framework

Benjamin H. Wilson et al.

Summary: A study demonstrated that by inserting an H-shaped rotaxane with specific structure into different MOFs, rotaxane-containing MOFs with precise spatial arrangements of components can be formed. Through the use of VT solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR), it was found that the dynamics of the rotor are influenced by the presence of the macrocycle, while the translational position of the macrocyclic wheel along the rotaxane axle is dictated by the bulk and rotational orientation of the central rotor.

Using the Mechanical Bond to Tune the Performance of a Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitter**

Pachaiyappan Rajamalli et al.

Summary: This study characterizes rotaxanes based on a carbazole-benzophenone thermally activated delayed fluorescence luminophore, demonstrating that the mechanical bond can lead to an improvement in key photophysical properties of the emitter. Computational simulations and X-ray crystallography suggest that weak interactions enforced by the mechanical bond between the axle and macrocycle result in the tuning of properties. The use of mechanical bonds to refine existing luminophores provides a new avenue for emitter optimization, ultimately increasing the performance of these molecules.

An elastic metal-organic crystal with a densely catenated backbone

Wenjing Meng et al.

Summary: The study reports a three-dimensional porous metal-organic crystal with exceptional structure connected only by catenation, showing dynamic geometry changes upon different conditions. The crystal has low Young's moduli and high deformability, especially along its c axis. This mechanically interlocked molecule-based design could lead to the development of porous materials with exotic mechanical properties, such as squeezable porous crystals.

A catalysis-driven artificial molecular pump

Shuntaro Amano et al.

Summary: This study introduces an autonomous chemically fueled information ratchet that continuously pumps crown ether macrocycles from bulk solution onto a molecular axle without the need for further intervention. By tuning the dynamics of the processes, the molecular machine is able to move macrocycles from their lowest energy state in the solution to a higher energy state on the axle, maintaining out-of-equilibrium [n]rotaxanes as long as unreacted fuel is present.

Fluorescence emission enhancement of a T-shaped benzimidazole with a mechanically-interlocked 'suit'

Houyang Xu et al.

Summary: A fluorescent T-shaped benzimidazole was successfully incorporated into a bicyclic macrocycle to form a suitane through supramolecular templated-synthesis, resulting in enhanced fluorescence emission. This method provides a potential pathway for the development of new complex fluorescent materials by taking advantage of mechanical bonding and molecular packing.

Translational dynamics of a non-degenerate molecular shuttle imbedded in a zirconium metal-organic framework

Benjamin H. Wilson et al.

Summary: In this study, a new [2]rotaxane molecular shuttle linker based on the binding of a 24-crown-8 ether macrocycle at a benzimidazole recognition site was synthesised and characterised. The translational motion of the molecular shuttle was studied both in solution and in the solid state. Incorporation of mesitylene into the pores of UWDM-11 was found to significantly increase the barrier for thermally driven translation of the macrocycle.

Exploring the dynamics of Zr-based metal-organic frameworks containing mechanically interlocked molecular shuttles

Ghazale Gholami et al.

Summary: Two Zr(IV) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were studied, incorporating a new H-shaped tetracarboxylate linker with [2]rotaxane molecular shuttles. Solid-state NMR and solution NMR spectra confirmed the successful incorporation of the [2]rotaxanes, while the study found that the structure of the linker affects the shuttling rate of the macrocyclic ring.
