Evidence for the Formation of Imidazole from Carbonyls and Reduced Nitrogen Species at the Individual Particle Level in the Ambient Atmosphere

Xiufeng Lian et al.

Summary: This study provides ambient evidence of the formation of imidazole through reactions between carbonyls and ammonium/amines at the individual particle level. The results suggest that the presence of internally mixed carbonyls and ammonium/amines significantly enhances the fraction of imidazole in particles, and a higher number fraction of imidazole is observed in cloud residual and interstitial particles compared to cloud-free particles.
