Whole-Voltage-Range Oxygen Redox in P2-Layered Cathode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Xun-Lu Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates reversible oxygen-redox in a wide voltage range of 1.5-4.5 V in layered metal-oxide cathodes, attributing the stability to Mg-ions as pillars in the Na layer and the triggering of oxygen-redox to intrinsic vacancies in the TM layer. Charge compensation from Mn- and O-ions contributes to the whole voltage range, while Fe-ions only contribute to the high-voltage region. The reversible oxygen-redox is achieved by orphaned electrons in O's nonbonding 2p orbitals pointing toward TM-vacancy sites, while Mg-ions in Na sites effectively suppress oxygen release.

Tuning local chemistry of P2 layered-oxide cathode for high energy and long cycles of sodium-ion battery

Chenchen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a layered P2-Na0.612K0.056MnO2 with large-sized K+ riveted in the Na-layers enables 0.9 Na+ (de)insertion with a reversible phase transition of P2-P'2. This cathode material demonstrates the highest specific capacity and energy density based on the redox of Mn3+/Mn4+, with high capacity retention after 100 cycles. This research provides insights into tunable chemical environments of transition-metal oxides for advanced cathode materials and promotes the development of sodium-ion batteries. High capacity and structural stable cathode materials remain challenges for sodium-ion batteries.

Sodium transition metal oxides: the preferred cathode choice for future sodium-ion batteries?

Qiannan Liu et al.

Summary: The exploration of next-generation sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) aims to replace lithium-ion batteries and address the depletion of lithium resources. Sodium transition metal oxides are considered promising cathode materials with anionic redox activity. Research on anionic redox in Li-rich transition metal oxides provides insight into high-capacity cathode materials for SIBs, with challenges and strategies discussed. It is expected that this work will provide new perspectives on controlling anionic redox activity and finding novel high-capacity oxide cathode materials for SIBs.
