Long COVID following mild SARS-CoV-2 infection: characteristic T cell alterations and response to antihistamines

Paul Glynne et al.

Summary: Long COVID is characterized by the emergence of multiple debilitating symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection. A study showed that patients with long COVID had T cell abnormalities, including reduced numbers of CD4+ and CD8+ effector memory cells and increased PD-1 expression on central memory cells. 72% of long COVID patients who received histamine receptor antagonists reported clinical improvement, although T cell profiling did not clearly distinguish those who responded to the medication.

Why Severe COVID-19 Patients Are at Greater Risk of Developing Depression: A Molecular Perspective

Ana P. Boucas et al.

Summary: Severe COVID-19 patients exhibit an overreaction of the immune system, resulting in a cytokine storm and increased inflammation. This article discusses the potential risk of depression in survivors of severe COVID-19 who experience significant immune system activation. It also proposes the mechanisms of how cytokine storm and SARS-CoV-2 neuroinvasion may lead to long-term mental health consequences.

Identification of antiviral antihistamines for COVID-19 repurposing

Leah R. Reznikov et al.

Summary: The urgency to identify therapies that prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and enhance COVID-19 outcomes is emphasized. The study identified potential repurposed antihistamine drugs with in vitro antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 through mining electronic health records. Clinical studies are recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of these antihistamines for disease prevention and treatment.

Calming the Storm: Natural Immunosuppressants as Adjuvants to Target the Cytokine Storm in COVID-19

Angela E. Peter et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a global health crisis with no specific antiviral treatment or suitable vaccine available. Patients with a dysfunctional immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection can develop a cytokine storm, leading to serious complications. Natural immunosuppressants have shown promise in alleviating the cytokine storm and can be used as adjuvants in treating COVID-19.

The Serum Metabolome of Moderate and Severe COVID-19 Patients Reflects Possible Liver Alterations Involving Carbon and Nitrogen Metabolism

Marianna Caterino et al.

Summary: The study conducted a mass spectrometry-based targeted metabolomic analysis on 52 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, revealing distinct changes in serum metabolites levels, particularly increased levels of lactic acid in all forms of the disease. Pathway analysis indicated dysregulation in energy production and amino acid metabolism. Overall, the variations in the serum metabolome of COVID-19 patients suggest a systemic perturbation induced by SARS-CoV-2, potentially affecting liver metabolism of carbon and nitrogen.
