Audiology in the time of COVID-19: practices and opinions of audiologists in the UK

Gabrielle H. Saunders et al.

Summary: The study found that a significant percentage of audiologists in the UK have adopted teleaudiology practices due to COVID-19 restrictions, and most plan to continue using it even after the restrictions are lifted. The main reasons for prior non-use of teleaudiology were related to clinical limitations/needs, available infrastructure, and patient preferences. Respondents believe teleaudiology will improve travel, convenience, flexibility, and scheduling, but may negatively impact personal interactions.

Experimental Efficacy of the Face Shield and the Mask against Emitted and Potentially Received Particles

Jean-Michel Wendling et al.

Summary: There is insufficient evidence to support the effectiveness of face shields for source control. Experimental results showed that the effectiveness of face masks and face shields varied depending on the specific conditions, with face shields performing better when worn by the receiver alone and both the emitter and receiver wearing face shields providing the best protection. It may be beneficial to include face shields in community transmission control strategies based on the experimental findings.

Influence of surgical and N95 face masks on speech perception and listening effort in noise

Torsten Rahne et al.

Summary: Daily-life conversation is impacted by the use of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Masks reduce speech perception ability, especially in noisy environments, and increase listening effort. Surgical masks reduce speech perception threshold by 1.6 dB, while N95 masks have a greater impact at 2.7 dB. Additionally, N95 masks significantly increase listening effort by 2.2 dB.

Listening Effort Is Not the Same as Speech Intelligibility Score

Matthew B. Winn et al.

Summary: Listening effort is a valuable concept that cannot simply be measured by speech intelligibility scores. This study explores the mechanisms of listening effort through sentence-repetition tasks, highlighting the impact of mental correction and different types of errors. The results suggest that a simple taxonomy of error types can be used to predict listening effort more accurately.

Achieving Effective Remote Working During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Work Design Perspective

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the challenges faced by remote workers during the pandemic, explores the impact of virtual work characteristics and individual differences on these challenges, and discusses how these factors affect worker performance and well-being. Results suggest that social support, job autonomy, monitoring, and workload play important roles in remote work challenges, while self-discipline serves as a significant moderator in these relationships.
