Sugar-Based Polymers from d-Xylose: Living Cascade Polymerization, Tunable Degradation, and Small Molecule Release

Antonio Rizzo et al.

Summary: Enyne monomers derived from D-xylose underwent living cascade polymerizations to prepare new polymers with a ring-opened sugar and degradable linkage incorporated into every repeat unit of the backbone. The polymerizations were well-controlled and had living character, which enabled the preparation of high molecular weight polymers with narrow molecular weight dispersity values and a block copolymer. By tuning the type of acid-sensitive linkage, the degradation profile of the polymer and the identity of the resulting degradation products could be changed.

The Impact of Water on Ru-Catalyzed Olefin Metathesis: Potent Deactivating Effects Even at Low Water Concentrations

Christian O. Blanco et al.

Summary: Ruthenium catalysts for olefin metathesis are commonly thought to be water-tolerant, but evidence shows that even low concentrations of water can lead to catalyst decomposition and reduced yields. Fast-initiating catalysts are most affected, while the slow-initiating iodide and cyclic derivatives exhibit maximum water tolerance. Computational studies suggest that hydrogen bonding of water to the substrate can also impact the reaction.

Bimolecular Coupling in Olefin Metathesis: Correlating Structure and Decomposition for Leading and Emerging Ruthenium-Carbene Catalysts

Daniel L. Nascimento et al.

Summary: The study investigates the bimolecular catalyst decomposition in olefin metathesis, focusing on the susceptibility of emerging ruthenium-cyclic(alkyl)-(amino)carbene (CAAC) catalysts. Through experimental and theoretical analysis, it is found that the faster decomposition of CAAC derivatives is due to stronger trans influence weakening the Ru-py bond. This accelerated decomposition poses a challenge for fast catalyst initiation, highlighting the need to inhibit bimolecular decomposition to enhance catalyst productivity and utility in olefin metathesis.

Synthesis of Vanadium Oxo Alkylidene Complex and Its Reactivity in Ring-Closing Olefin Metathesis Reactions

Dmitry S. Belov et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis of a catalytically active V oxo alkylidene, VO(CHSiMe3)(PEt3)(2)Cl, which shows the highest reported productivity with various terminal olefins in ring-closing metathesis reactions among known V catalysts. Theoretical studies suggest that the beta-hydride elimination pathway is significantly disfavored for V oxo species, which may have important implications for future applications in this field.
