Real-Time Observation of Soft Magic-Size Clusters during Hydrolysis of the Model Metallodrug Bismuth Disalicylate

Daniel Szczerba et al.

Summary: The solvolysis of bismuth disalicylate was studied using X-ray pair distribution function (PDF), revealing catalysis by traces of water and multistep cluster growth. The ratio of major species Bi9O7 and Bi38O44 depended on exposure to air, time, and solvent. Solution-phase cluster structures exhibited higher symmetry and reduced off-center Bi3+ displacements compared to solid-state analogues.

EMM-25: The Structure of Two-Dimensional 11 x 10 Medium-Pore Borosilicate Zeolite Unraveled Using 3D Electron Diffraction

Jung Cho et al.

Summary: The structure of novel medium-pore borosilicate zeolite EMM-25 was determined using continuous rotation electron diffraction (cRED). A new ammonium dication OSDA was found to reduce synthesis time significantly, and structural disorder in the form of swinging zigzag chains was observed in the EMM-25 framework.

A single-molecule van der Waals compass

Boyuan Shen et al.

Summary: Single-molecule imaging is a challenging yet beneficial technique for investigating intermolecular interactions at the molecular level, particularly van der Waals interactions at the sub-nanometre scale under confinement conditions. The use of a rotating para-xylene molecule as a pointer allows for real-space imaging and identification of changes in van der Waals interactions related to channel geometry. This study not only provides insight into host-guest interactions in porous materials, but also encourages further exploration of other single-molecule behaviors using electron microscopy techniques.
