Data Analysis and Background Subtraction in Neutron Spin Echo Spectroscopy

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of background correction in neutron spin echo measurements, reviews different methods to subtract the buffer, and studies the impact of small errors in background subtraction on results. In the large dynamic range of modern neutron spin-echo spectrometers, multiple effects become visible in a single measurement, particularly for vesicles where membrane undulations and translational diffusion affect the intermediate scattering function. The study investigates how considering these factors differently can affect the results obtained from data analysis.

The activities of channel-forming peptides and proteins depend on lipid bilayer properties, but how membrane-spanning channels affect lipid bilayer properties is less understood. This study found that peptides had different effects on the collective membrane dynamics, with some peptides stiffening the membrane while others softened it, highlighting the complex interplay between lipids and proteins in determining membrane dynamics.
