Inorganic/organic double-network ion gel membrane with a high ionic liquid content for CO2 separation

Eiji Kamio et al.

Summary: The inorganic/organic double-network ion gel membranes were fabricated with different ionic liquid contents to study their potential for CO2 separation. The mechanical strength of the DN ion gel was optimized by adjusting the composition of the inorganic and organic networks. The CO2 permeability of the DN ion gel membrane exponentially increased with increasing IL content, approaching the theoretical maximum, showing the potential for high-performance IL-based CO2 separation membranes.

Coumarin derivative trigger controlled photo-healing of ion gels and photo-controlled reversible adhesiveness

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: A reversible light-driven method was introduced to fabricate photo-responsive ion gels using coumarin-based building blocks. These ion gels exhibited sol-gel transition under suitable UV light irradiation and could be functionalized for photo-healable and photocontrolled adhesion applications. This work provides a new approach to develop multifunctional ion gels with dynamic covalent bonds.

Evaluation of a Model Photo-Caged Dehydropeptide as a Stimuli-Responsive Supramolecular Hydrogel

Peter J. Jervis et al.

Summary: Short peptides capped with aromatic groups can form supramolecular hydrogels in aqueous media, with potential applications in tissue engineering, drug delivery, and wound dressings. A new photo-responsive supramolecular hydrogel was developed, which can be disassembled with UV light, allowing for controlled drug release and potential skin-related applications. This system is based on a proteolytically resistant dehydrodipeptide structure, presenting opportunities for specialized drug delivery and biological applications.

Design of absorption process for CO2 capture using cyano based anion ionic liquid

Nesrine Amiri et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids are considered potential candidates for CO2 absorption due to their tunable properties, wide liquid range, negligible vapor pressure, and high CO2 solubility. This study investigated the feasibility of CO2 separation using the cyano-based anion ionic liquid [hmim][TCB] as a physical absorbent, comparing its performance with the organic solvent DEPG. Results showed that [hmim][TCB] was more efficient than DEPG for feed gas containing between 20 and 40 mol.% CO2, requiring lower solvent flow rate at 5 mol.% CO2 in feed gas, and the solvent could be regenerated through pressure and temperature swing processes.

Effect of Alkyl Chain Length of N-Alkyl-N′-(2-benzylphenyl)ureas on Gelation

Tomoki Komiyama et al.

Summary: The molecular structure and alkyl chain length of urea derivatives affect their effectiveness as gelators, with urea derivatives containing long alkyl chains showing the best gelation effect in polar solvents, while those with short alkyl chains are more effective in non-polar solvents. Ionic liquids behave similarly to polar solvents, with urea derivatives containing long alkyl chains being the most effective gelators.

Direct Observation of Photo-Induced Reversible Sol-Gel Transition in Block Copolymer Self-Assembly Containing an Azobenzene Ionic Liquid

Haruna Mizuno et al.

Summary: The use of atomic force microscopy allowed for direct observation of photo-induced reversible changes in a block copolymer self-assembly containing an azobenzene ionic liquid and undergoing sol-gel transition. This transition was accompanied by a structural change from order to disorder, leading to a change in ionic conductivity. Surprisingly, the rapid photo-induced changes in conductivity and rheology occurred within approximately 30 seconds, possibly due to the fast diffusion of the ionic liquid.
