Navigating the Shifting Landscape of Engagement in Northern Research: Perspectives from Early Career Researchers

Anita Lafferty et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been an examination of research in northern Canada and its ties to extractive, colonial practices, with a focus on community and Nation-engaged practises. Early career researchers (ECRs) from a range of disciplines engage with the communities and Indigenous Nations they work in, discussing approaches to respectful engagement, knowledge translation, and responsibilities for engagement. The Five R's of research-relevance, reciprocity, respect, responsibility, and relationship-are found to ensure the benefits of Western-derived knowledge for the communities and Nations worked alongside by ECRs.

Indigenous guardians as an emerging approach to indigenous environmental governance

Graeme Reed et al.

Summary: Indigenous guardian programs have become an important institution for indigenous governments to engage in environmental governance, but research on this topic is mainly focused on Australia and more studies from other regions are needed. Moreover, further research is necessary to understand the implications of guardian programs for indigenous self-determination.

Two-Eyed Seeing: An Indigenous framework to transform fisheries research and management

Andrea J. Reid et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems with Western scientific approaches in fisheries research and management, emphasizing the concept of Two-Eyed Seeing for knowledge coexistence and complementarity. Through case studies in Canadian aquatic and fisheries, the operationalization of Two-Eyed Seeing is explored, highlighting the importance of action and the potential for a plural coexistence of Indigenous knowledge systems and Western scientific insights.

Indigenizing the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation

Mateen A. Hessami et al.

Summary: Although a diversity of approaches to wildlife management persists in Canada and the United States of America, the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation (NAM) is a prevailing model for state, provincial, and federal agencies. The success of the NAM is both celebrated and refuted amongst scholars, with most arguing that a more holistic approach is needed. Colonial rhetoric permeates each of the NAM's constituent tenets-yet, beyond these cultural and historical problems are the NAM's underlying conservation values.
