Mapping Flow-Obstructing Structures on Global Rivers

Xiao Yang et al.

Summary: People have built various obstructions in rivers for different purposes, but due to the long and complex history of construction and removal, there is a lack of consistent global record. By using a consistent method and high-resolution images, a Global River Obstruction Database was established, recording different types of obstructions, with high classification consistency for obstructions fully intersecting rivers but lower consistency for partial obstructions.

A new vector-based global river network dataset accounting for variable drainage density

Peirong Lin et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new global hydrography dataset that estimates the spatial variability of river network drainage density worldwide. By utilizing a machine learning approach and incorporating global climatic, topographic, hydrologic, and geologic conditions, high-quality global hydrography data is obtained to support water resources management and enable global modeling of river system processes.

Estimating seasonal water budgets in global lakes by using multi-source remote sensing measurements

Tan Chen et al.

Summary: This study estimated the seasonal water storage variation of 463 lakes and reservoirs worldwide, finding that North American and African basins have relatively large seasonal water storage changes globally. The latitudinal zonality of LWSsc is significant, concentrated between 30 degrees N and 60 degrees N in the northern hemisphere and between the equator and 30 degrees S in the southern hemisphere.

Human alteration of global surface water storage variability

Sarah W. Cooley et al.

Summary: Research indicates that 57% of seasonal surface water storage variability globally occurs in human-managed reservoirs, with natural water bodies showing smaller variations. Natural variability is highest in tropical basins, while human-managed variability is greatest in the Middle East, southern Africa, and the western USA.

Dataset of Georeferenced Dams in South America (DDSA)

Bolivar Paredes-Beltran et al.

Summary: Dams and their reservoirs play a significant role in society and the environment, facilitating water resource management while potentially causing adverse impacts related to safety, ecology, and biodiversity. Studies suggest that climate change could exacerbate these impacts, underscoring the importance of continuous monitoring and research on dams.
