Charge-Transfer Excitations within Density Functional Theory: How Accurate Are the Most Recommended Approaches?

David Mester et al.

Summary: The performance of density functionals for charge-transfer excitations is assessed using benchmark sets. RS-PBE-P86/SOS-ADC(2) achieves the most accurate results for both types of CT excitations. Global DH methods show unexpectedly excellent results for intramolecular transitions but have limitations for bimolecular complexes. Serious deficiencies and wrong long-range behavior of the XC energy are revealed for intermolecular CT transitions, making the application of LC-DH methods not recommended.

Iridium(III) Sensitisers and Energy Upconversion: The Influence of Ligand Structure upon TTA-UC Performance

Christopher E. Elgar et al.

Summary: Six substituted ligands based on 2-(naphthalen-1-yl)quinoline-4-carboxylate and 2-(naphthalen-2-yl)quinoline-4-carboxylate were synthesized and found to be effective cyclometallating ligands for Ir-III complexes. X-ray crystallographic studies showed a distorted octahedral geometry of the complexes, with differences in observed triplet lifetimes attributed to the ligand structure. Complexes based on 1-naphthyl derived ligands demonstrated viable photosensitizing properties with upconversion quantum efficiencies of 1.6-6.7%.

Revealing the Contest between Triplet-Triplet Exchange and Triplet-Triplet Energy Transfer Coupling in Correlated Triplet Pair States in Singlet Fission

Vibin Abraham et al.

Summary: Understanding the separation of the correlated triplet pair state is crucial for enhancing solar cell efficiency through singlet fission. Key interactions include exchange interaction and triplet-triplet energy transfer, with ferromagnetic or negligible exchange interaction being necessary for favorable dissociation. Geometries with these conditions are achieved through chromophore packing, such as in tetracene.

Computational Discovery of TTF Molecules with Deep Generative Models

Alexander Yakubovich et al.

Summary: This study introduces a computational workflow based on quantum chemical calculations and generative models using deep neural networks to discover novel materials, especially for molecules suitable for triplet-triplet fusion in OLED devices. Generative machine learning models and neural networks assist in pinpointing promising regions in the chemical space for exploration and predicting factors such as excitation energies. This approach can aid in the computer-aided design of materials with favorable energy level alignment for efficient energy transfer and exciton fusion in OLEDs.

Impact of chemical modifications on the luminescence properties of organic neutral radical emitters

Eunkyung Cho et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that even minor chemical modifications can significantly impact the luminescence properties of organic radicals, particularly the energy of their lowest excited state. The radiative and nonradiative rates of TTM-xPyID radicals are influenced by the hybridization between their CT state and ground state and LE state.

NIR-to-vis photon upconversion in rubrenes with increasing structural complexity

Edvinas Radiunas et al.

Summary: This study successfully enhanced the emission quantum yield of rubrene by 40-fold through decorating special side moieties around the periphery and core, but found that sterically crowded rubrenes exhibit lower upconversion performance compared to conventional rubrene. The results indicate a trade-off between suppressed singlet fission and enhanced triplet-triplet annihilation in rubrene emitters, which can be addressed by careful selection of side moiety linking positions.
