Indoor formaldehyde removal by catalytic oxidation, adsorption and nanofibrous membranes: a review

Berly Robert et al.

Summary: Indoor air pollution by formaldehyde is a serious threat to human health, requiring the use of techniques such as absorption, chemisorption, biological and botanical filtration. The study focuses on the principles and performances of catalytic oxidation, adsorption, and nanofibrous membranes for formaldehyde removal. High efficiency of supported noble metal and metal oxide-based materials in oxidation, photocatalytic oxidation under various light conditions, and chemisorption method using amino-containing adsorbents are highlighted.

A Nonoxide Catalyst System Study: Alkali Metal-Promoted Pt/AC Catalyst for Formaldehyde Oxidation at Ambient Temperature

Chunying Wang et al.

Summary: Metal oxides are commonly used as supports in noble metal-based catalysts for formaldehyde oxidation, but this study demonstrates the successful application of activated carbon, a nonoxide support, for Pt catalysts in HCHO oxidation. The addition of alkali metal Na enhances the stability of Pt species, increases Pt dispersion, and improves the activation of chemisorbed oxygen and water, leading to direct conversion of HCHO to CO2 and H2O on the Na-Pt/AC-R catalyst. This research extends the promotional effect of alkali metals on supported Pt catalysts to a nonoxide carrier system.

Mussel-inspired photothermal synergetic system for clean water production using full-spectrum solar energy

Ruofei Zhu et al.

Summary: Utilizing a functional photothermal-photocatalysis system inspired by mussel chemistry, researchers have developed a superhydrophilic composite material (CuO@PDA/PB) for full-spectrum solar energy absorption and efficient water evaporation. The superhydrophilic CuO@PDA/PB demonstrated higher evaporation rate and efficiency compared to other samples under 1.0 sun, providing a cost-effective platform for seawater desalination and sewage purification.

Zn-based metal organic framework derivative with uniform metal sites and hierarchical pores for efficient adsorption of formaldehyde

Junjie Yang et al.

Summary: The Zn-containing graphite carbon (Zn-GC) obtained from the pyrolysis of a Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) showed excellent adsorption capacity for formaldehyde, with 736 times that of commercial activated carbon and 5.6 times that of ZSM-5 adsorbents. The superior performance of Zn-GC can be attributed to its surface chemical characteristics and hierarchical pore structure, indicating great potential in the field of organic pollutant removal.
