Formation and use of anaerobic consortia for the biotransformation of sulfur-containing extracts from pre-oxidized crude oil and oil fractions

Olga Maslova et al.

Summary: A novel solution for desulfurization of fossil raw materials is proposed, utilizing a hybrid chemical-biocatalytic scheme with biogas and sulfide production. Pre-oxidation and extraction using specific compounds are employed to remove sulfur-contained compounds from petroleum fractions, followed by methanogenic treatment to convert sulfur into inorganic sulfide or cell biomass, resulting in high methane content in biogas output. Bioluminescent express-methods are utilized to monitor toxicity and metabolic activity during the process.

Investigation of biosurfactants produced by three indigenous bacterial strains, their growth kinetics and their anthracene and fluorene tolerance

Madhurya Ray et al.

Summary: This study isolated three bacterial species capable of producing biosurfactants from contaminated sites in Haldia, India, and found that they exhibit high tolerance to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The produced biosurfactants were stable under a wide range of temperature, pH, and salinity conditions. The findings suggest that these indigenous biosurfactant producing strains can be utilized for bioremediation purposes in environments with high PAH concentrations.
