Lignin-enzyme interaction: A roadblock for efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosics

Caoxing Huang et al.

Summary: Efficiently producing second-generation biofuels from biomass remains a long-term challenge due to biomass recalcitrance. Lignin significantly contributes to biomass recalcitrance by physically limiting enzyme access to carbohydrates. Research is focused on mitigating the negative effects of lignin on enzyme performance.

Life cycle assessment of organosolv biorefinery designs with the complete use of biomass

Fang Liu et al.

Summary: Biorefinery utilizing plant materials from marine or terrestrial sources aims to produce high value-added products through less aggressive processes. A study compared the efficiencies and environmental performances of a Formic acid pretreatment based biorefinery with a conventional Dilute acid pretreatment based one, showing superiority in various aspects except for ODP. The Formiline supply chain was expanded to produce additional products with positive GHG reduction potentials, contributing to China's carbon neutrality ambition.

Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Formic Acid with 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran: Experiments, Process Modeling, and Economics

Antero T. Laitinen et al.

Summary: Formic acid (FA) is successfully extracted from CO2 electrolysis using 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF), with vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data and liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data obtained. A hybrid extraction and distillation process is designed to produce commercial grade product. Economic analysis shows that 2-MTHF is a cost-effective solvent for extracting FA from dilute streams (<20 wt % FA).

Pretreatment of corn stover by acidic and basic choline chloride solutions for enzymatic hydrolysis

Benkun Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, acid and alkali catalyzed choline chloride pretreatment of corn stover showed different effects on lignin and xylan removal, with acidified ChCl being more effective in delignification and alkalified ChCl better at removing xylan. However, alkalified ChCl pretreatment resulted in higher glucose yield compared to acidified ChCl pretreatment. The correlation studies indicated that high delignification and larger cellulose crystallite size were key factors contributing to high enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. Additionally, analysis of extracted lignin showed changes in molecular weight and phenolic hydroxyl groups based on different pretreatment methods.

Dimethyl isosorbide via organocatalyst N-methyl pyrrolidine: scaling up, purification and concurrent reaction pathways

Mattia Annatelli et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive investigation was conducted on the high-yielding methylation of isosorbide via DMC chemistry promoted by the nitrogen organocatalyst N-methyl pyrrolidine (NMPy). The optimized reaction conditions were efficiently applied for the methylation of isosorbide epimers, isoidide, and isomannide, as well as for some preliminary scale-up tests. The role of NMPy in the methylation of isosorbide was elucidated through the synthesis, isolation, and characterization of all seven methyl and methoxycarbonyl intermediates observed in the etherification process.
