Cu active sites confined in MgAl layered double hydroxide for hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate to ethanol

Jianzhe Shi et al.

Summary: This study reports a facile co-precipitation method to confine Cu active sites in layered double hydroxide for the hydrogenation of DMO to ethanol. The CuMgAl-LDH-1.25 catalyst exhibits stable performance with high DMO conversion and ethanol selectivity, achieved through a synergistic effect of regular lamellar structures, highly dispersed Cu active sites, and moderate acidic sites.

Highly Efficient CO2 to CO Transformation over Cu-Based Catalyst Derived from a CuMgAl-Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH)

Yi Chen et al.

Summary: CuMgAl-LDHs were used as precursors to prepare Cu-based catalysts with high activity and stability for the RWGS reaction, achieving a CO2 conversion rate of 33.5% and selectivity close to 100%. The high dispersion of Cu and the presence of basic sites for CO2 adsorption were identified as the main factors contributing to the superior performance of the catalyst.

Highly active and efficient Cu-based hydrotalcite-like structured materials as reusable heterogeneous catalysts used for transcarbonation reaction

Praveen Kumar et al.

Summary: A series of Cu-Al hydrotalcite-like compounds were prepared and investigated as catalysts for the transcarbonation of glycerol with dimethyl carbonate. The Cu/Al molar ratio significantly influenced glycerol conversion and glycerol carbonate yield. Among the synthesized catalysts, the Copper-Aluminum (3Cu-Al@500) catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity.

Synergistic catalytic hydrogenation of furfural to 1,2-pentanediol and 1,5-pentanediol with LDO derived from CuMgAl hydrotalcite

Xiaomin Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of layer double metal oxides were prepared from CuMgAl hydrotalcite precursors by urea decomposition. The as-prepared samples were characterized and found to exhibit excellent catalytic properties in the selective hydrogenolysis of furfural to 1,2-pentanediol and 1,5-pentanediol. The catalyst with optimal Cu+/Cu2+ ratio and acid-base amount showed the best catalytic performance, indicating the synergy of Cu+ and acid-base properties in the selectivity of 1,2- and 1,5-PeDs.

Characterizing and using a new bi-functional catalyst to sustainably synthesize methyl levulinate from biomass carbohydrates

Elena-Emilia Oprescu et al.

Summary: Recent efforts have focused on converting biomass carbohydrates into alkyl levulinates for biofuel additives, searching for cheap and active solid catalysts. A new catalyst was used to synthesize methyl levulinate, with emphasis on the impact of catalyst loading, fructose concentration in methanol, and reaction temperature. Characterization of the catalyst and optimization of process conditions were conducted, along with the development of a mathematical model and a new kinetic model based on experimental data.

Selective conversion of furfuryl alcohol to levulinic acid by SO3H-containing silica nanoflower in GVL/H2O system

Ruoqing Wang et al.

Summary: Levulinic acid was produced in high yields (90%) from hemicellulose-derived furfuryl alcohol catalyzed by a dandelion-like, SO3H-modified silica nanoflower solid acid (SiNF-SO3H). The catalyst's porous structure provided abundant catalytic sites for the conversion of furfuryl alcohol, while the mixed-solvent GVL-H2O inhibited undesirable polymerization reactions, resulting in highly selective conversion to levulinic acid. The SiNF-SO3H/(GVL-H2O) catalytic system is both green and sustainable, with potential applications in various acid-catalyzed schemes for lignocellulosic biomass conversion.

Switching production of γ-valerolactone and 1,4-pentanediol from ethyl levulinate via tailoring alkaline sites of CuMg catalyst and hydrogen solubility in reaction medium

Mengjiao Fan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that GVL and 1,4-PeD can be efficiently produced from ethyl levulinate (EL) by adjusting the copper content and abundance of basic sites in the CuMg catalyst, as well as selecting the appropriate reaction solvent. The presence of isopropanol as a solvent promotes the production of 1,4-PeD, while water as a reaction medium affects the stability of the CuMg catalyst.

Highly effective production of levulinic acid and γ-valerolactone through self-circulation of solvent in a continuous process

Hongxing Wang et al.

Summary: A sustainable and cost-competitive catalytic process was proposed for high yield production of levulinic acid (LA) and gamma-valerolactone (GVL) from biomass-derived furfuryl alcohol (FOL) fluid, using GVL as a self-circulation solvent. The fixed-bed reactors demonstrated higher yield and stability compared to conventional autoclave, due to shortened residence time and reduced polymer deposition. Integration of hydration and hydrogenation tandem reactions in the fixed-bed reactors achieved a high yield of GVL by avoiding side reactions.

Sustainable production of γ-valerolactone and δ-valerolactone through the coupling of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation

Hongxing Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a synchronized production of high yields (>98%) of GVL and DVL was achieved over cheap Cu catalysts through catalytic coupling of 1,5-PDO dehydrogenation and EL hydrogenation. Improved substrate conversion and selectivity were observed without the use of solvents and hydrogen consumption.
