A Biasing Approach to Design Ultra-Low-Power Standard-Cell-Based Analog Building Blocks for Nanometer SoCs

Francesco Centurelli et al.

Summary: This paper presents an approach to design analog building blocks for nanometer systems on a chip (SoCs) using digital standard-cells, ensuring robustness against PVT variations. It introduces an Analog Body Bias Generator (ABBG) that utilizes bulk voltages to control the current and voltage of CMOS inverters. The design flow for the standard-cell based analog building blocks is also discussed, along with an example application of a low-power operational transconductance amplifier (OTA).

Pedro Toledo et al.

Summary: This paper models and analyzes passive-less fully-digital operational transconductance amplifiers (DIGOTA) for energy- and area-constrained systems from a design viewpoint. The explicit models for main performance parameters are derived and validated through direct comparison with measurement results, providing practical guidelines for achieving design targets. The unique voltage and power reduction capabilities of DIGOTA make it well suited for cost-sensitive and purely-harvested systems.

A Novel Standard-Cell-Based Implementation of the Digital OTA Suitable for Automatic Place and Route

Gaetano Palumbo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel implementation of a digital-based Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA) as a fully digital alternative to the conventional differential pair for low voltage analog amplifiers and comparators. The proposed implementation uses only digital gates available in standard cell libraries and has been integrated in a commercial 130 nm CMOS process. Post layout simulations show the performance of the digital-based circuit compared to the state of the art.
