Benign prostatic hyperplasia - what do we know?

Conor M. Devlin et al.

Summary: The pathogenesis of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) involves pathways related to androgens, estrogens, insulin, inflammation, proliferative reawakening, stem cells, and telomerase. Some pathways described over 40 years ago have been reevaluated and are now considered important in the development of BPH. Current research focuses on inflammatory processes within the prostate leading to growth factor production, stem cell activation, and cellular proliferation as key mechanisms in BPH.

Rauwolfia vomitoria extract suppresses benign prostatic hyperplasia by reducing expression of androgen receptor and 5α-reductase in a rat model

Tian Fang et al.

Summary: The extract of Rauwolfia vomitoria significantly reduced prostate weight and proliferation markers in BPH rats, while also decreasing the expression levels of androgen receptor and its associated proteins. Compared to the reference drug, R. vomitoria extract did not significantly affect sperm count, suggesting it may be a promising therapeutic agent for BPH with milder side effects.

Predicting therapeutic drugs for hepatocellular carcinoma based on tissue-specific pathways

Liang Yu et al.

Summary: This study developed an effective method based on tissue-specific pathways to predict three potential therapeutic drugs for HCC. Experimental validation showed that two of these drugs significantly inhibited HCC cell viability, with one showing lower toxicity to normal cells. This suggests that the proposed approach is successful in discovering novel therapeutic options for HCC.
