UV/Chlorine Process: An Efficient Advanced Oxidation Process with Multiple Radicals and Functions in Water Treatment

Kaiheng Guo et al.

Summary: Due to the worsened global water quality, the presence of chemical and microbial contaminants in water raises serious concerns for human health. Therefore, it is crucial to identify and develop effective and environmentally friendly water treatment technologies to obtain clean water. This article focuses on the radical chemistry of UV/chlorine, an emerging advanced oxidation process (AOP), and its role in the abatement of contaminants.

DBP formation and toxicity alteration during UV/chlorine treatment of wastewater and the effects of ammonia and bromide

Zhechao Hua et al.

Summary: UV/chlorine treatment is efficient for the removal of micropollutants, but can lead to increased formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) and toxicity alteration. This study investigated effluent organic matter characterization, DBP formation, and toxicity changes after UV/chlorine treatment of wastewater, with a particular focus on the impact of ammonia and bromide. The results showed that UV/chlorine treatment increased the formation of certain DBPs, while post-chlorination further increased the toxicity. However, the acute toxicity to Vibrio fischeri and genotoxicity determined by the umu test decreased after UV/chlorine treatment. Additional ammonia decreased the formation of DBPs, but increased genotoxicity. The addition of bromide dramatically increased brominated DBP formation and overall toxicity, but also reduced acute toxicity and genotoxicity.

UV/chlorine process for degradation of benzothiazole and benzotriazole in water: Efficiency, mechanism and toxicity evaluation

Tao Yang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the degradation of Benzothiazole and Benzotriazole by UV/chlorine involved various reactive species and radicals, with different dominant mechanisms depending on the pH conditions. The efficiency of degradation was significantly influenced by pH values. Seven disinfection by-products were identified during the degradation process, with trichloromethane being the main by-product. The toxicity assessment revealed that detoxification of BZA could be achieved by UV/chlorine, while the toxicity of BTZ was increased due to the formation of intermediates.

A review on the degradation efficiency, DBP formation, and toxicity variation in the UV/chlorine treatment of micropollutants

Yujin Yeom et al.

Summary: The UV/chlorine process is an emerging advanced oxidation treatment method that can effectively degrade refractory micropollutants, but may also lead to the formation of toxic transformation products and disinfection byproducts. Studies have shown that the toxicity variations of micropollutants in the UV/chlorine treatment are related to their compound-specific reactivity towards specific reactive species. Further research on the cost-effectiveness of the UV/chlorine process regarding micropollutant degradation without increasing associated toxicity is necessary.

Degradation of cyclophosphamide during UV/chlorine reaction: Kinetics, byproducts, and their toxicity

Ji-Young Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that the UV-B/chlorine reaction is effective in degrading cyclophosphamide (CP), especially under acidic pH conditions. Over 56% of CP was mineralized within 8 hours by the reaction. However, the transformation products produced may increase toxicity, emphasizing the need to reduce toxicity when using the UV-B/chlorination process for CP treatment in water.
