Missed diagnoses and misdiagnoses of adults with autism spectrum disorder

Laura Fusar-Poli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the psychiatric history of adults in Italy who received their first diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study found that many participants had previously received diagnoses of intellectual disability, psychoses, personality disorders, and depression. The study also identified sex differences in the age of diagnosis and ADOS-2 scores. These findings provide important information for child and adult psychiatrists.

Annual Research Review: Shifting from 'normal science' to neurodiversity in autism science

Elizabeth Pellicano et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the challenges that the conventional medical paradigm of child psychiatry faces, emphasizing on deficits, individual rather than broader context, and a narrow perspective. It also explores how elements of the neurodiversity paradigm can potentially overcome the limitations of the medical model in autism research.

Global burden of lung cancer attributable to ambient fine particulate matter pollution in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2019

Xiaorong Yang et al.

Summary: According to the Global Burden of Disease Study, the number of lung cancer deaths and DALYs attributable to ambient PM2.5 pollution significantly increased in 2019, with China ranking first globally. High SDI regions showed a rapid decrease in ASMR, while in low to middle SDI regions, the mortality rate or DALY rate increased in all age groups from 1990 to 2019.

Temporal trend of gastric cancer burden along with its risk factors in China from 1990 to 2019, and projections until 2030: comparison with Japan, South Korea, and Mongolia

Xiaorong Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that while the age-standardized rates of gastric cancer have decreased in most countries, the absolute burden of gastric cancer is gradually increasing, especially in countries like China and Mongolia. Smoking and high-sodium diet have been identified as the main risk factors contributing to gastric cancer occurrence over the past 30 years.

Understanding the substance use of autistic adolescents and adults: a mixed-methods approach

Elizabeth Weir et al.

Summary: This study compared substance use experiences between autistic and non-autistic adolescents and adults using a mixed-methods approach. Findings suggest that autistic individuals are less likely to engage in substance misuse, but more likely to use drugs for self-medication and report vulnerability associated with substance use. Clinicians should be aware of these patterns when managing substance use in autistic patients.

Parental Socioeconomic Status and Autism Spectrum Disorder in Offspring: A Population-Based Cohort Study in Taiwan

Tsung Yu et al.

Summary: The study from Taiwan suggests that parental socioeconomic status is associated with the risk of autism spectrum disorder in offspring, with higher SES independently correlated with higher ASD risk. In contrast, higher SES was independently associated with lower risk of intellectual disability. Potential factors related to socio-economic status may contribute to the positive relation of SES and ASD risk.

Autism in Australia: Community Knowledge and Autistic People's Experiences

Sandra C. Jones et al.

Summary: The studies found misconceptions and knowledge gaps about autism in the general community, as well as a lack of understanding on how to support autistic individuals. More research is needed to integrate perspectives from both autistic individuals and the broader community, and to develop communication and education interventions that involve autistic individuals rather than being focused on them.
