3D Printed Microfluidic Supported Liquid Membrane Module for Radionuclide Separations

Anna G. Servis et al.

Summary: Microfluidic supported liquid membrane extraction is a promising technique for microliter-scale radionuclide separations due to its small reagent volumes and efficient extraction process. Flat sheet supported liquid membrane modules with different channel depths were fabricated using a commercially available resin 3D printer. The performance was characterized by quantifying uranium transport and developing a numerical transport model, showing that quantitative extraction of uranium can be achieved at slow flow rates and shallow channel depths. The numerical model agreed well with experimental results and showed that the modules reach steady state in under 9 minutes with considerable buildup of uranium in the membrane.

Summary: Actinium is a peculiar element with all radioactive isotopes, hindering research on its compounds despite increasing interest in its use for cancer therapies. Limited structural data on Ac3+ compounds and scarce comparisons with other elements create challenges in accurately evaluating its size and coordination chemistry. This review aims to guide researchers in actinide sciences and those developing actinium-based radiotherapies from isotope production to clinical trials.

Leveraging slow DOTA f-element complexation kinetics to enable separations by kinetic design

Jessica A. Jackson et al.

Summary: This study explores a new approach using kinetic control in metal ion extraction systems, showing that the rate constant of lanthanide-DOTA complexes increases with the lanthanide series, exhibiting non-monotonic behavior in terbium and thulium. Results suggest that separations between metals are more effective in the early phase of contact, diminishing over longer contact times. The use of slowly complexing ligands like DOTA may be suitable for kinetically based systems, providing a new design basis for f-element separations.
