Using a blind EC mechanism for modelling the interaction between binaural and temporal speech processing

Saskia Roettges et al.

Summary: The study reanalyzed the binaural and temporal integration of speech reflections with blind binaural speech intelligibility model and hybrid-models. It found that adjusting binaural processing errors and dynamic range could improve the prediction accuracy.

A series of SNR-based speech intelligibility models in the Auditory Modeling Toolbox

Mathieu Lavandier et al.

Summary: This technical paper presents a series of speech intelligibility models that have been developed to predict the intelligibility of target speech in the presence of multiple noise sources. The models consider factors such as binaural listening, reverberation, envelope modulation, and hearing impairment. The paper also explains when and how each model should be used, and provides an example of predictions using a dataset from the literature.

Assessing HRTF preprocessing methods for Ambisonics rendering through perceptual models

Isaac Engel et al.

Summary: Binaural rendering of Ambisonics signals is a common method for reproducing spatial audio content. In this study, nine HRTF preprocessing methods were compared, and it was found that certain methods performed better at lower spatial orders. A newly proposed method, BiMagLS, displayed the best overall performance and is recommended for bilateral Ambisonics signal rendering. The results indirectly validate the ability of perceptual models to predict listeners' responses.

Auditory model-based estimation of the effect of head-worn devices on frontal horizontal localisation

Pedro Llado et al.

Summary: This study proposes a computational method to estimate the effect of head-worn devices on horizontal plane localisation through distortion of interaural cues. Head-related impulse responses were measured and a binaural auditory model was used to compute interaural cues. A shallow neural network was trained to predict the perceived direction and position uncertainty of a sound source. The results suggest that the method can predict the degradation of localisation ability for specific head-worn devices in the frontal horizontal plane.

Decision making in auditory externalization perception: model predictions for static conditions

Robert Baumgartner et al.

Summary: In natural conditions, listeners attribute sounds to external objects, but this can be distorted when using hearing devices like headphones. A model combining monaural and interaural cues accurately predicted externalization of sound sources, suggesting a fixed weighting of these cues in static listening environments. This study highlights the importance of different cues in how we perceive sound sources.

Towards modelling active sound localisation based on Bayesian inference in a static environment

Glen McLachlan et al.

Summary: Bayesian statistical inference has become a staple technique for modeling human multisensory perception, successfully combining sensory and prior information to optimally interpret the environment. Sound localization models based on Bayesian inference show promise in explaining human behavioral data, particularly due to the multiple sound localization cues available in binaural signals.

Instrumental Quality Predictions and Analysis of Auditory Cues for Algorithms in Modern Headphone Technology

Thomas Biberger et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of distortions typically occurring in hearables on monaural and binaural audio quality models. Results showed that the signal processing algorithms mainly impaired spectral cues, with monaural audio quality models that capture spectral distortions achieving the best prediction performance. Adjustments to an audio quality model based on binaural aspects led to an improved overall performance indicated by a mean Pearson linear correlation of 0.89 between obtained and predicted ratings.
