Effect of Urolithin A Supplementation on Muscle Endurance and Mitochondrial Health in Older Adults A Randomized Clinical Trial

Sophia Liu et al.

Summary: This randomized clinical trial investigated the effects of urolithin A supplementation on aging-related decline in muscle function. The results showed that urolithin A was safe and well-tolerated, and it improved muscle endurance and plasma biomarkers associated with cellular health. However, it did not significantly improve the 6-minute walk distance and maximal ATP production in hand muscles compared to the placebo. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Tricuspid Regurgitation in Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction: Marker or Target?

Davide Margonato et al.

Summary: Tricuspid regurgitation (TR), historically not considered a primary healthcare problem, has recently gained attention from the scientific community. TR can complicate heart failure, most commonly as a functional disease, and its independent prognostic role is still debated. The relationship between TR and LVSD, as well as the potential therapeutic target of TR, remains unclear.

Quality control of the mitochondrial proteome

Jiyao Song et al.

Summary: Mitochondria contain a diverse array of proteins from two genomes and require synchronized gene expression for proper function. The mitochondrial proteome is highly adaptable and regulated by quality control systems to ensure cellular adaptation and functionality. Defects in mitochondrial protein quality control mechanisms can lead to proteotoxic insults and cell death, highlighting the critical importance of maintaining protein homeostasis in mitochondria.

Mitochondrial quality surveillance as a therapeutic target in myocardial infarction

Hang Zhu et al.

Summary: Myocardial infarction is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and mitochondrial dysfunction plays a critical role in its pathogenesis. Mitochondria have a quality control system that maintains and restores their structure and function. When damaged mitochondria cannot be repaired, poorly structured mitochondria will be degraded through mitophagy.

Summary: Orthopedic manifestations are common in patients with Costello syndrome and cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome, with differences in severity and characteristics based on genetic variants. Functional assessments by using 6MWT and PODCI could help evaluate the impact on patient outcomes and guide tailored treatment approaches.

Mitochondria-localized AMPK responds to local energetics and contributes to exercise and energetic stress-induced mitophagy

Joshua C. Drake et al.

Summary: Mitochondria form a complex, interconnected reticulum maintained through coordination among biogenesis, dynamic fission, fusion and mitophagy in response to various cues. Specific isoforms of AMP-activated protein kinase are localized on the outer mitochondrial membrane and vary in activation across the reticulum in response to energetic stress. The discovery highlights the complexity of sensing cellular energetics in vivo and its implications for targeting mitochondrial energetics in disease treatment.
