Measurement of crystallographic orientation of quartz crystal using Raman spectroscopy: application to entrapped inclusions

Xin Zhong et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is widely used in mineralogy and petrology for identifying mineral phases, including measuring residual pressure of mineral inclusions and understanding the crystallographic orientations between inclusions and hosts. The analysis of tiny mineral inclusions using EBSD technique is time consuming, but polarized Raman spectroscopy can provide precise measurement of crystallographic orientation. The orientation of tiny mineral inclusions can be accurately determined using the Raman polarizability tensor of quartz, with a precision of approximately 0.25 degrees.

Raman anisotropy in serpentine minerals, with a caveat on identification

Roberto Compagnoni et al.

Summary: This study utilized micro-Raman spectroscopy to analyze various serpentine minerals while considering crystal orientations, finding significant shifts in peak wavenumbers and intensities. Caution is advised when characterizing variably oriented serpentine minerals with micro-Raman techniques.

Fracture Shape and Orientation Contributions to P-Wave Velocity and Anisotropy of Alpine Fault Mylonites

Jirapat Charoensawan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of fracture orientations and shapes on P-wave anisotropy in rocks from the Alpine Fault shear zone. The numerical models show that the presence and orientation of fractures significantly influence the anisotropy, with differing results between 2D and 3D models.

A common type of mineralogical banding in serpentine crack-seal veins

Matthew S. Tarling et al.

Summary: The study identifies a new type of mineralogically banded serpentine crack-seal vein, where thin bands of chrysotile are followed by thicker bands of polygonal serpentine/lizardite. This suggests a common set of processes involving crack opening and sealing in various structural sites within serpentinite-bearing faults and shear zones.

The intracrystalline microstructure of Monte Fico lizardite, by optics, μ-Raman spectroscopy and TEM

Giancarlo Capitani et al.

Summary: The Monte Fico lizardite crystals exhibit a complex internal skeletal spongy microstructure, with different micrometric domains showing distinct optical reliefs. These features, interpreted as lizardite and chrysotile, are confirmed by TEM analysis, demonstrating tight crystallographic control between the crystals.
