Extracting Governing Laws from Sample Path Data of Non-Gaussian Stochastic Dynamical Systems

Yang Li et al.

Summary: Advances in data science are enabling us to analyze and understand the complex dynamics of systems with experimental and observational data. This study presents a data-driven method to infer the governing laws of stochastic dynamical systems with non-Gaussian asymmetric Levy processes and Gaussian Brownian motion from available data.

Stochastic sensitivity analysis and early warning signals of critical transitions in a tri-stable prey-predator system with noise

Koushik Garain et al.

Summary: Critical transitions are irreversible shifts in the behavior of a system that occur when a certain parameter reaches a tipping point. Predicting these transitions is important but challenging. Recent studies suggest that generic early warning signals, such as critical slowing down, can detect when systems approach a critical point. In this study, a two-dimensional prey-predator model is used to investigate critical transitions. Various early warning indicators are explored to predict the transitions, and the stochastic sensitivity function technique is applied to find a threshold value for noise intensity. The results provide insights into predicting critical transitions in two-dimensional systems.

STOCHASTIC ENERGY BALANCE CLIMATE MODELS WITH LEGENDRE WEIGHTED DIFFUSION AND AN ADDITIVE CYLINDRICAL WIENER PROCESS FORCING

Gregorio Diaz et al.

Summary: This research investigates a class of one-dimensional nonlinear stochastic parabolic problems associated with Sellers and Budyko diffusive energy balance climate models, introducing a Legendre weighted diffusion and cylindrical Wiener processes forcing. The study emphasizes the importance of suitable assumptions on Wiener processes leading to a pathwise random PDE and giving essentially deterministic formulations depending on random parameters. Two applications are provided, focusing on the stability of solutions as the Wiener process approaches zero and the asymptotic behavior of solutions over long periods.

Arbitrary-Order Finite-Time Corrections for the Kramers-Moyal Operator

Leonardo Rydin Gorjao et al.

Summary: In order to improve the reconstruction of stochastic evolution equations from empirical time-series data, the study derives a full representation of the generator of the Kramers-Moyal operator via a power-series expansion of the exponential operator. This allows for separating finite-time corrections into terms with and without derivatives of the Kramers-Moyal coefficients. The study provides a closed-form solution expressed through conditional moments, which can be directly extracted from time-series data, aiding in the analysis of stochastic processes.

Summary: Two independent data analysis methodologies were applied to identify stable climate states in an intermediate complexity climate model, revealing a third intermediate stable state in addition to the well-known warm and snowball earth states. The approaches showed remarkable agreement and demonstrated the interplay between the identified multistable climate states.

A model for Dansgaard-Oeschger events and millennial-scale abrupt climate change without external forcing

Georg A. Gottwald

Summary: The study proposes a conceptual model that can generate abrupt climate changes similar to Dansgaard-Oeschger events. The model demonstrates that abrupt climate changes emerge dynamically through complex interactions of the ocean, the atmosphere, and intermittent processes, rather than being triggered by external perturbations. The model suggests that intermittencies in sea-ice cover are the key cause of the abrupt climate changes.
