Temporal Trends of Persistent Organic Pollutants across Africa after a Decade of MONET Passive Air Sampling

Kevin B. White et al.

Summary: This study reports the concentrations of 20 POPs monitored in 9 African countries, showing significant declines in the concentrations of many POPs over the past decade while others remain stable or even increasing. The elevated concentrations at some sites are primarily due to sustained local emissions, while the low concentrations at Mt. Kenya represent the continental background level primarily influenced by long-range transport.

Global intercomparison of polyurethane foam passive air samplers evaluating sources of variability in SVOC measurements

Lisa Melymuk et al.

Summary: The study examines the comparability of data collected from different PUF-PAS designs and the impact of analysis in different laboratories on the results. Results indicate that variability introduced by analysis in different laboratories far exceeds differences due to sampler design, highlighting the need for intercalibration exercises to ensure analytical comparability between laboratories.

Application of land use regression modelling to describe atmospheric levels of semivolatile organic compounds on a national scale

Kevin B. White et al.

Summary: The study utilized data from the MONET passive air sampling network in combination with land use regression models to successfully describe atmospheric levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in Czechia, identifying their sources. The models demonstrated spatial variability at a national scale.

Tracking POPs in Global Air from the First 10 Years of the GAPS Network (2005 to 2014)

Jasmin K. Schuster et al.

Summary: The Global Atmospheric Passive Sampling (GAPS) network, established in 2005 across 55 global sites, provides information on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) concentrations in air on a global scale. Measurements spanning 5-10 years at 40 sites show varying trends for different OCPs and PCBs. Global trends reflect sources and recycling of HCH, emissions from old PCB stockpiles, and restrictions on endosulfan use.
