Coupling electrochemical CO2 conversion with CO2 capture

Ian Sullivan et al.

Summary: Electrochemical CO2 conversion into fuels or chemicals and CO2 capture from point or dilute sources are two important processes to address the gigaton challenges in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Both processes are energy intensive, but synergistic coupling between them can improve energy efficiency and reduce costs, by eliminating the need for CO2 transport and storage or capture media regeneration.

Unified mechanistic understanding of CO2 reduction to CO on transition metal and single atom catalysts

Sudarshan Vijay et al.

Summary: The study investigates the activity of transition metals, metal-nitrogen-doped carbon catalysts, and supported phthalocyanine in the CO2 electroreduction to CO, and presents a unified mechanistic picture. It is found that MNCs have similar electron transfer properties to TMs in CO2 conversion, but can be limited by either CO2 star adsorption or proton-electron transfer reactions. The increased activity of MNC catalysts is attributed to the stabilization of larger adsorbate dipoles due to their discrete and narrow d states.

Intrinsic Descriptors for Coordination Environment and Synergistic Effects of Metal and Environment in Single-Atom-Catalyzed Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction

Hao Yuan et al.

Summary: The study explores the activity of SACs in different coordination environments on graphene for CO2 reduction reaction, finding that carbon and nitride coordination leads to higher activity. Two intrinsic descriptors for coordination environment and synergistic effects of metal active center and coordination environment were proposed, showing potential for screening high performance SACs based on intrinsic properties. Also, the descriptors were confirmed to be universal for CO2RR and even suitable for ORR based on available literature data.

Role of oxygen-bound reaction intermediates in selective electrochemical CO2 reduction

Xing Zhi et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the important role of oxygen-bound intermediates in affecting the selectivity of CO2 reduction products, and outlines practical techniques and strategies for probing the evolution of intermediates and promoting the selectivity of electrocatalysts. The study highlights the preferred reaction pathways to certain products when regulated by oxygen-bound species, based on theoretical calculations, electrochemical measurements, and operando spectroscopy observations. The geometries of these oxygen-bound intermediates and their binding on a catalyst surface determine the breakage or preservation of C-O bonds, significantly influencing the direction of selectivity towards a final product.
