Observing System Simulation Experiments Investigating Atmospheric Motion Vectors and Radiances from a Constellation of 4-5-μm Infrared Sounders

Will McCarty et al.

Summary: The study showed that a constellation of passive infrared spectrometers strategically designed for deriving three-dimensional wind retrievals can have positive impacts on both mass and wind fields. Imperfect observations had smaller impacts compared to perfect observations but still retained many benefits. The experiments also highlighted the importance of middle troposphere AMVs and the challenges in fully utilizing carbon dioxide absorption radiances in the assimilation system.

Summary: Hyperspectral infrared measurements of Earth's atmosphere from space have proven to be valuable for various applications. The CubeSat Infrared Atmospheric Sounder (CIRAS) project aims to demonstrate a fully functional infrared sounder at a significantly lower cost than traditional systems. Preliminary testing has shown that the CIRAS instrument meets key performance requirements and is ready for further development.

Summary: Satellite vertical atmospheric sounding has greatly advanced in the past 50 years, with the potential to greatly improve localized severe weather forecasts. By combining polar hyperspectral and geostationary multispectral measurements, forecast accuracy for tornadic storms can be significantly enhanced.
